The Short Answer: Probably Not
Most independent NDIS support workers do not need to charge GST on their invoices. Under Australian tax law, you are only required to register for GST if your annual business turnover exceeds $75,000. Since many sole traders earn below this threshold from their NDIS work alone, they are not GST-registered and do not add GST to their invoices.
The $75,000 Threshold
The GST registration threshold is based on your total business turnover, not just your NDIS income. If you have multiple income streams (e.g., NDIS work plus other freelance or business activities), you need to add them together. Once your combined annual turnover exceeds $75,000, you must register for GST with the ATO.
If you are approaching this threshold, consult a tax professional to understand your obligations. You can register for GST voluntarily even if you are below the threshold, but this adds BAS reporting requirements.
Are NDIS Supports GST-Free?
Many NDIS supports are classified as GST-free under Division 38 of the A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999. This means that even if you are GST-registered, you may not need to add GST to certain NDIS support invoices. However, the rules are complex and depend on the specific type of support and your registration status.
For most sole traders below the $75,000 threshold, the practical impact is simple: you do not charge GST, and your invoice shows the total amount without a GST component.
What to Show on Your Invoice
If you are not GST-registered, your invoice should state "No GST" or show the GST amount as $0.00. You must still include your ABN on every invoice. Without an ABN, the payer must withhold 47% of your payment.
If you are GST-registered, your invoice must be a valid tax invoice showing the GST amount (10% of the taxable amount) separately. Check with your accountant whether the specific NDIS supports you provide are GST-free.

GST and the NDIS Price Guide
The rates in the NDIS Price Guide 2025-26 are listed as GST-inclusive where GST applies. When you use the NDIS rate calculator, the displayed rates (e.g., Weekday $70.23/hr) already account for any applicable GST. If you are not GST-registered, you can still charge up to these rates — the price limit applies regardless of your GST status.
